Cape Breton Begins Recovery After Devastating Flooding
CAPE BRETON — Communities across Cape Breton are beginning the long process of recovering from severe flooding that washed out roads, damaged infrastructure and left some residents cut off from surrounding areas.
More than 200 millimetres of rain fell in parts of Cape Breton in less than two days. The flooding damaged roads, bridges and culverts across the island and prompted local states of emergency in several areas. By Tuesday, states of emergency had been lifted in Richmond and Victoria counties as conditions improved, although significant cleanup and repair work remains.
The flooding also claimed the life of a 46-year-old Richmond County woman, whose body was recovered after she was reported missing near a flooded bridge.
Residents are being asked to continue using caution around damaged roads and infrastructure as recovery crews assess the extent of the damage.
