High-risk sex offender in Kentville remanded after breaching release conditions

A convicted sex offender will remain in custody for at least two more days.

Matthew William Rozins waived reading of the charges during a two-minute appearance Monday in Kentville provincial court.

Rozins, 43, is charged with breaching probation and failing to comply with a condition of a release order. There is also an application pending to revoke release on other matters.

“Under the circumstances, I will grant the Crown’s request to adjourn the show cause hearing to Wednesday,” Associate Chief Judge Ronda van der Hoek said.

The Truro Police Service issued a news release on Oct. 21 stating Rozins was living in the Truro area. The next day, it issued another release saying Rozins was no longer residing in Truro or believed to be staying in the area.

The Kentville Police Service posted on its Facebook page on Friday that Rozins was in the Kentville area. The post said Rozins is a convicted sex offender, who has a criminal history with offences in several provinces. Kentville police said it was releasing information under Nova Scotia’s release of high-risk offender information protocol.

In a Sunday Facebook post, Kentville police said Rozins was arrested Saturday night for allegedly failing to comply with his conditions.

As part of his release conditions, Rozins was subject to a number of restrictions. He could not attend public parks, public swimming areas, daycare centres, school grounds, playgrounds, community centres, or any location where persons under the age of 16 are present or can reasonably be expected to be present. He was also prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
