Carney Pitches Canada to World’s Biggest Investors at Toronto Summit
TORONTO — Prime Minister Mark Carney is making a major pitch for international investment as Canada looks to reduce its economic dependence on the United States.
A two-day investment summit beginning in Toronto brings together approximately 300 executives representing organizations that collectively manage more than $120 trillion in assets.
Canada is presenting more than 160 potential projects spanning mining, energy, infrastructure, technology and advanced manufacturing.
The federal government hopes the strategy can attract more than $1 trillion in investment over five years.
Among the international financial firms represented are BlackRock, Blackstone and Singapore’s Temasek.
The summit comes as the Canada-U.S. trade relationship remains under significant strain, increasing pressure on Ottawa to develop new markets and investment relationships outside the United States.
