Halifax Consulate Threat Case Delayed Until October

The court case involving a Halifax man accused of threatening the United States consulate has been postponed until October.

Ali Assakereh, 54, was scheduled to enter a plea and choose a trial format Thursday. His new legal-aid lawyer requested additional time to review the case.

Police arrested Assakereh in August after he allegedly placed a propane tank and flammable liquids in a vehicle parked near the consulate. The incident prompted the evacuation of a large section of downtown Halifax.

He faces charges of mischief and uttering threats, along with an allegation under the Criminal Code provision covering threats against internationally protected people, including diplomats.

The Crown has characterized the latter allegation as terrorist activity. The charges have not been proven in court.
