More Than 10,000 Sign Petition Calling for Return of Nova Scotia Uranium Ban
HALIFAX — Opposition to uranium mining in Nova Scotia continues to grow, with more than 10,000 people now adding their names to a petition calling on the provincial government to restore the province’s uranium mining ban.
The issue has become a significant environmental and political debate in the province. Opposition Liberals and New Democrats were preparing to bring additional petitions to the legislature as MLAs returned to Province House this week.
Supporters of restoring the ban have raised concerns about the potential environmental effects of uranium exploration and mining. The issue comes as the provincial government continues efforts to develop Nova Scotia’s natural-resource sector.
With the legislature back in session, uranium development is likely to remain one of the issues facing MLAs during the fall sitting.
