Nova Scotia Bill Proposes New Protections Against AI-Generated Intimate Images
Nova Scotia has introduced legislation intended to expand protections for victims of intimate-image abuse, including images created or altered with artificial intelligence.
The proposed Public Safety Act would also cover livestreamed content and threats to distribute an intimate image. A person could seek help after withdrawing consent for an image to be shared.
The legislation would presume that an intimate image was distributed without consent unless evidence establishes otherwise. The province says this would reduce the burden placed on victims.
Other provisions would allow properties connected to human trafficking, organized crime, sexual exploitation or stolen-property trafficking to be closed for as long as one year.
The bill also proposes a new framework for conservation officers, updated 911 legislation and provincial authority to protect emergency helicopter routes by regulating building heights near hospital helipads.
The measures remain proposed legislation and are not yet in force.
