Province opens financing option for Nova Scotia Power

By Russell Stevenson

Nova Scotia has approved regulations allowing Nova Scotia Power to seek permission for a different way of financing approved utility costs.

The approach, called securitization, can spread repayment over a longer period at a lower interest rate. The provincial government says it could help limit sudden increases in electricity rates.

Any application would go before the Nova Scotia Energy Board for review.

Friday’s announcement creates a financing option for the utility. It does not approve a particular application or announce an immediate reduction in customers’ power bills.
