Statistics Canada reported Friday that the unemployment rate rose to 6.5 per cent, up from 6.4 per cent in August.
Both full-time and part-time employment declined. Job losses were concentrated among younger workers and women aged 25 to 54.
Educational services, health care and social assistance, and manufacturing recorded decreases. Despite the monthly decline, total employment remained 95,000 higher than a year earlier.
